Misting Systems and Pets

As summer approaches, our tendency is to look for ways to escape the heat and to get everybody, pet included, sweat free.

To protect our beloved pets, we must always think of ways to keep them cool or in shaded areas.

Here are some handy pet care tips:

1. Remember that small pets are more sensitive to heat. If you have rabbits, guinea pigs or birds, you must keep them indoors during the summer season. If your pets are allowed to roam around the house, let them do so in the laundry area or the bathroom where they can walk around on cool tiles.You may also consider draping their cages with wet towels and provide icepacks or frozen water bottles that your pets can have access too. Leaning against cool surfaces allows them to regulate their own body heat.

   Do not put cages or pet houses in direct sunlight and make sure they have enough space to breathe easily.

2. Stock their cages or place different water containers around the house. If you have more than one pet, provide numerous sources of water in case they end up sharing. Remember to place containers in places that are not too hot. You may also add ice cubes to their water to help keep it cool.
3. Let your pets enjoy swilling and place a pool under a shade or in a place that is not in direct sunlight. Your dogs will surely appreciate this. If you have kids sharing your yard with your pets, remember that safety is always a priority.
4. On very hot days, it is much better to walk you dogs early morning or in the evening. If time permits or if you live close to the beach, you may also take your pets there and let them paddle a little to cool down.
5. Always allow air into their cages or houses by opening windows and doors. You may consider putting on a screen protection so pets do not wander out of the house. Add fans if air-conditioning is not available. You may also use a misting system to help circulate and condition the air. There are portable misting systems available and ideal for moving around the house, so people and pets stay cool.
6. If you notice any discomfort with your pets, you can try wetting their feet or misting water on their faces. This can be done to many animals such as your dogs, cats, ferrets, poultry and caged birds as they control inner temperature through their feet. But be careful with birds and do not saturate their feathers as this can cause the, to go into shock.

As humans we get uncomfortable when it becomes too hot. Our pets and animals experience the same. Always keep them cool and hydrated.

If you have to take them outside, remember never to leave your pets inside the car when the weather is warm. It only takes minutes for your pets to die when left in a hot car.
